Declutter Before you Sell

Decluttering Advice from Director Wendy Peterman

Before you even begin to think about putting your house on the market, we suggest you embark upon a huge declutter. This will really help you begin to come to terms with your plans to sell, which can be an incredibly daunting idea even if you are looking forward to your next home.

My advice to you is to find a free weekend and then get to work. Get the kids looked after, invite over a friend, put a bottle of wine in the fridge, and then get started.

Here’s the kind of process you might like to follow:

  • First, begin by clearing your mind of any sentimental attachment to the property. It’s hard to do but will help with the next few steps.
  • Next, try to depersonalise your house by rationalising your belongings and putting away any evidence of hobbies, photos, etc.
  • Then tidy up the clutter and try to keep it tidy.
  • Take a good look around the house and only keep the things that you really need; go through every room with a fine-tooth comb.
  • Then take all your unwanted items to a charity shop.

Remember, first impressions count. The entrance hall will set the tone for the rest of the viewing, so don’t use it as a dumping ground and clear up the coats, hats, umbrellas, and shoes. If you possess a communal area, give it a tidy, a fresh coat of paint, and smarten it up as much as possible. It might also be worth using artificial light to highlight certain areas of the room and make it look more spacious in any dark corners or hallways. Also, keep your window dressing to a minimum to maximise natural light.

Once your declutter is complete, be sure to reward yourself with a well-deserved rest. Open up that bottle of wine and be sure to enjoy the look on everyone’s faces when they come home.
